That villainous Russian gangster Aleksei Sytsevich aka Rhino (Paul Giamatti) actually only appears in the final three minutes of the movie as a sequel-bait hook, with the movie cutting to black just as his battle against Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) kicks off.

How The Trailer Hid It

This is another case of hiding the truth in plain sight, with the film's trailers placing a significant focus on the quasi-pornographic slow-motion action shots of Spidey flinging himself towards Rhino.

As a result, every fan rightly assumed this would be a fully-realised sequence in the film, because why would any filmmaker intentionally want to leave their audience with a case of blue balls this obnoxious and infuriating?

No matter the film's eventual quality, the marketing certainly sold the apparent awesomeness of the Spidey/Rhino fight well enough, and none of us saw this final rug-pull coming.

And though fans never got to see the teased battle, at least the film's failure led to the web-slinger making his long-awaited debut in the MCU.
