10 Movie Villains Who Were Clearly Just Misunderstood

By Edward Owen /

1. Loki €“ Thor

The only thing Loki is guilty of is going too far and catastrophic decision-making. Yes he€™s devious and achieves his goals through trickery, but one could argue that banishing Thor is a pretty laudable goal. The first act of the film makes it clear that Thor is in no position to rule €“ in fact, his rule would probably result in much of Asgard getting annihilated in a war nobody wants. Remember, when he does go and confront the king of the Frost Giants €“ the supposedly really evil character in the entire ensemble €“ he firstly doesn€™t want to engage the Thunder God, Lady Sif and the Warriors Three because he knows what his actions might unleash. Everyone€™s reasonable except Thor, who duly starts a war by reacting to someone calling him a princess. The question is, do you really want that man on the throne? No you don€™t €“ Loki€™s banishing plan was probably the best thing that could€™ve happened. Really, it did seem that Loki was far better suited to ruling, if only because he understood the subtleties of power. After all, the man does eventually obliterate the leader of Asgard€™s sworn enemies using nothing but double-crossing and trickery, a decision given extra weight by the fact he€™s killing his own father to save an adopted father who only took him in as a political gambit. Until he decides to blow up Jotunheim €“ again, for understandable reasons in wanting to protect Asgard€™s borders while preventing a bloody war €“ he€™s actually doing a good job of ruling. The one pre-genocide mistake he makes is telling Thor Odin was dead, thus sparking off his transformation into a competent individual. Other than that, he€™s the ruler Asgard deserved.
