No list dealing with weddings is complete without the ceremony from Rob Reiner's inimitable classic, The Princess Bride. From Peter Cook's officiating and Buttercup's (Robin Wright) glazed-over expression, to Prince Humperdinck's enraged abridgement of the proceedings, the scene is one of non-stop horror and hilarity. It also includes a powerful element of coercion, which is found in other entries to this list. Despite its comedic trappings, the scene shows how marriage and love have not always been synonymous, and how up until recently matrimony had been an expression of economic, political and social power.
