10 Movies Based On A True Story You Need To Watch Before You Die
10. Spotlight
When you learn a film has a cast of Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Brian d’Arcy James, Liev Schreiber and Billy Crudup, you know you're in for something interesting. And Spotlight does not disappoint.
The film revolves around The Boston Globes “Spotlight” team, the oldest continuously operating investigative journalist unit in the United States, as they write their story about widespread cases of child sex abuse throughout Boston by Roman Catholic priests. What started out as an investigation into one priest in the city of Boston, soon evolves into a list of 87 individual priests across the entire state of Massachusetts and multiple attempts to hide the story.
The film also highlights the difficulties the team face when conducting their investigation. From the September 11 attacks forcing the team to focus their efforts elsewhere, to the moral dilemma of continuing the investigation to fully understand and expose the problem over revealing what they have learned early in order top prevent more victims.
The film is a testament to the hard work of the Spotlight team and how their work sparked multiple countries to investigate similar cases of abusive priests.
