We've all made the mistake of believing a movie to be directed by one person when, in fact, it's been helmed by someone else, but what about those movies that we all collectively believed were made by another person? How does this happen? Usually it's a result of a director having an extremely similar artistic style to another, more established filmmaker or broaching their favoured subject matter, but it can also be due to manipulative marketing, which touts a new movie as being "presented by..." or "from the mind of..." a famous filmmaker in an attempt to get more butts in seats. In most of these instances, the director we believe made the film is just taken as a given, and we don't even think about double-checking it. To the casual cinemagoer, it likely isn't an issue, though as a cineaste it can be a major source of embarrassment if talking craft with friends, who will no doubt be eager to pick your assertion apart.
