A movie about gang tensions in the ghetto? Why, it'd have to be directed by Spike Lee, wouldn't it? After the phenomenal success of his outstanding 1989 gang drama Do the Right Thing, it wouldn't have been a surprise to see Lee make Boyz n the Hood just two years later, given its stylistic, tonal and thematic similarity to much of his work. However, Boyz n the Hood was a much more surprising revelation: it was the writer-director debut of John Singleton, who at the mere age of 24 ended up being nominated for a Best Director Oscar, making him the youngest nominee for the award in cinema history. It's not just Lee's stature as a prolific black filmmaker that makes many believe he directed the movie, but that Singleton's directing credits have been so dubious ever since: after all, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Abduction aren't exactly stretching Singleton's skills now, are they? As such, it's much easier to believe it came from the pen of a more experienced filmmaker with an at the time surging reputation.
