8. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Poor Edgar Wright. It sometimes seems like the Baby Driver helmer can’t catch a break, as evidenced by his early exit from the MCU due to creative differences over his vision for Ant Man and the failure of his instant cult classic, the Michael Cera-starring graphic novel adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs the World. At least Baby Driver and The World’s End were financially successful enough for studios to trust the oddball auteur in the future—hopefully.

In 2010, multiple factors conspired to put audiences off Scott Pilgrim before it appeared in theatres. Chief amongst them was a case of blockbuster fatigue, with Scott arriving in cinemas in late August after a slew of big budget efforts had already exhausted cinemagoer’s appetite for action.

There was also the more specific issue of comic book film fatigue too, though.

Long before the MCU was releasing another instalment every second week, 2010 saw a lot of spandex grace the silver screen, and whilst early releases such as Kick Ass won big by subverting genre expectations, audiences had already sat through Iron Man 2, Megamind, and Super by the time Scott Pilgrim arrived, meaning the appetite for stories subverting the conventions of the comic medium was limited.
