Made by the people who brought us Bridget Jones' Diary and Notting Hill, Love Actually tells 10 individual love stories, intricately woven in a heart-warming Christmas tale. The plot lends itself to being something that nobody could possibly dislike, as there's something for everyone. There's no shortage of dishy actors; for the film features Andrew Lincoln, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. The latter plays the prime minister and I suspect made people everywhere suddenly a lot more interested in politics. If that doesn't float your boat what about the beautiful Keira Knightley? It's the fact that every plot strand explores a different type of love that makes it of such broad appeal. There's physical love, unrequited love, platonic love. There's your childish school year crush between Thomas Sangster's character, Sam, and an American girl in his class; broken love, in the form of Alan Rickman's and Emma Thompson's characters' failing marriage; love that has to try to overcome barriers such as language, or family situation. There's no shortage of laughter in this film either mainly thanks to Bill Nighy and Rowan Atkinson's over the top characters. However, it's not your regular rom-com, by any means, for not everyone gets their happy ending. This film reminds us that love isn't always a perfect textbook romance, it's a learning curve for everybody; and in this way, does an incredible job of capturing how love 'actually' is. Even the most cynical people with regard to "happily ever after" have to admit that at the very least, this film is real, and for that reason, they can't possibly slate it.
