8. Betty Blue (1986)

Beautiful Betty seems like a real ray of sunshine. She is sexy, fun and passionate about everything she does. And lucky old Zorg, a handyman, has the pleasure of shagging Betty every night. They start a life together and are blissfully in love. However, things begin to turn a little sour... Zorg finds pills in Betty's handbag and asks her what they are for. She says sleep. Alarm bells should be ringing, especially when Betty, working as a waitress, gets into an altercation with a diner and stabs her with a fork. Or what about the time Betty throws a strop and puts her arm through a glass window? Things definitely get sketchy when Betty has a negative pregnancy test and cuts off her hair and smears lipstick all over herself. And nabbing a little boy to play with her in a teepee is definitely whacked out behaviour. The inevitable happens. Betty goes mega nuts, pokes out her own eye and is taken to a mental hospital where she is in an irreversible catatonic state. Zorg, unable to deal with the condition Betty is in, puts her out of her misery by smothering her with a pillow. Betty is a classic case of Borderline Personality Disorder, albeit most borderliners do not end up catatonic. She displays all the classic symptoms - fear of abandonment, severe mood swings, violent acts when angered and self harm. Betty Blue is an absorbing blow by blow account of one woman's crack up. The nice soundtrack and Beatrice Dalle's good looks make it bearable instead of agonisingly painful. She is very very good in her role as Betty. Some might say a little too convincing...
