What We Expected: The trailers did a fantastic job marketing 300 as "the next Gladiator", focusing on the superb style as well as the plentiful gory action and the seemingly emotive story about a King trying to save his people and get back to his family. What We Got: An enjoyable if simplistic action film that looked fantastic but didn't have a whole lot going on beneath the surface; its emotions were shallow, and well, Gerard Butler isn't exactly an apt substitute for Russell Crowe. It delivered the basic gory goods amid some fantastic looking set-pieces, though the dialogue mostly sounded like a series of wrestling promos. Still, the film simmered down pretty quickly after the massive hype surrounding it, and it's now relegated to the dusty back of most people's Blu-Ray catalogues.
