6. The Protagonist Isn't Whitewashed - Ghost In The Shell
2017's Hollywood adaptation of acclaimed Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell came under intense scrutiny as soon as Scarlett Johansson was cast as The Major, amid accusations that the source material was carelessly whitewashing a Japanese character for cynical commercial reasons.
Johansson and director Rupert Sanders nevertheless assured audiences that the actress was in fact playing a new character named Major Mira Killian, which while still effectively a whitewash, was at least nowhere near as objectionable as if Johansson actually played the series' original Japanese protagonist, Motoko Kusanagi.
But then the movie came out, and a whole other PR s**tstorm unfolded when the big twist was revealed, that Mira was actually the Japanese Motoko all along, her mind having been placed in Johansson's Caucasian shell.
As a result, Johansson's denials ended up seeming silly at best, if not maliciously duplicitous in order to rescue the film's box office. Ultimately the film crashed and burned commercially, and has largely been forgotten a mere three years later.
