10 Movies That Could Be Major Surprise Hits Of 2019

You may not have heard of them, but they're coming for your hard earned cash!

Looking to the year ahead, 2019 is chock full of box office heavy hitters. Disney alone are bringing us Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Star Wars Episode 9.

For serious cinephiles there are new movies from Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, both reuniting with some of the biggest names in acting - Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci headline The Irishman for Scorsese, while Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt turn out for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Tarantino.

Is there room in the calendar for anything else to break out and take an unsuspecting public by storm? If the likes of Bird Box, BlacKkKlansman and Free Solo all proved last year that smaller or unconventional films can find a slice of the market. So there's certainly hope for some break-outs this year too...

10. Boss Level

Starring Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts and Frank Grillo, Boss Level features Roy Pulver, a retired special forces soldier, who finds himself trapped in a sinister government program, which results in a never-ending time loop leading to his death.

It sounds high concept, if not a little similar to Duncan Jones’ Source Code, but director Joe Carnahan’s populist sensibility does occasionally translate into box office success, as he found with 2011’s Liam Neeson thriller The Grey.

Mel Gibson certainly doesn’t take on many projects these days, whether that’s through choice or a lack thereof - we can only speculate. He’s certainly not popular with the kids, so seems like an odd choice for a movie whose title invokes video games, but it could be that this little-known genre pic, will pick up some serious heat when we see a trailer.
