10 Movies That Had No Chance Of Living Up To The Hype

2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The reception to the Star Wars prequels should have given fans cause for concern when George Lucas decided to return to his other iconic franchise after a long delay. While Lucas shouldn't be awarded all of the blame, which is something director Steven Spielberg has made very clear over the years, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull was nonetheless a crushing disappointment that came nowhere near to living up to almost two decades worth of hype.

The problems with the movie are plentiful; ignoring the franchise's reliance on practical effects for unconvincing CGI, uninteresting villains, fridge-nuking, pointless sub-plots, disappointing action and a climax that goes for full on what-the-f**kery in a tornado of disappearing pyramids, flying saucers and rubbish-looking spacemen. But hey, at least it was great to see Harrison Ford bring his grizzled and world-weary charisma to the title role again.

As one of the most anticipated movies ever made, Crystal Skull was always going to be a box office smash hit. And it was, earning an impressive $786.6m worldwide despite leaving many fans disappointed. Sometimes, waiting so long to make a sequel in such an enduringly popular franchise leads to expectations that become unrealistically high, a fate which definitely befell the fourth Indiana Jones movie.
