10 Movies That Made You Say 'WTF Were They Thinking'
10. Ray Winstone's Russian Accent - Black Widow
By and large, you can look at Marvel Studios as the gold standard for casting. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and more have all become their characters. The MCU literally couldn't have done a better job.
When the franchise does miss however, it misses hard. Who would have pitched Ray Winstone as the Russian villain Dreykov, and who signed off bringing the actor into the recent Black Widow?
Ray Winstone's fame has largely come thanks to his roles as a cockney gangster, and in this he excels. However, even the American accent he spoke with in The Departed was a stretch, and the Russian drawl he gave to Dreykov in 2021 was downright comical. Any kind of intimidation the character built was erased by that impossible-to-ignore cockney twang.
Since this was a villain that had first been mentioned way back in 2012, there was a fair bit of expectation for Dreykov. The character ultimately fizzled out with nothing memorable about him, one of many reasons Black Widow's long-awaited solo feature was a disappointment.
