3. Godzilla

After a successful six-season run on AMC's Breaking Bad as milquetoast chemistry teacher-turned meth kingpin Walter White, Bryan Cranston's career looked like it was headed beyond the limits of television. The trailers for America's second attempt to reboot the Godzilla franchise heavily featured his character - a nuclear scientist who lost his wife in a meltdown years earlier - barking orders and warnings at superiors that something big, unstoppable and dangerous was about to emerge. He was clearly the headling the picture.

After the loss of his wife, he has become obsessed with the disaster and distant from his son (Aaron Taylor Johnson). They return to the would-be Chernobyl to discover that the radiation warnings are a hoax, the area is simply harbouring something much, much worse. He and Johnson are detained, and when it appears he may be humanity's last hope, Godzilla's nemesis destroys the walkway upon which Cranston is standing.

The film even gives the audience a glimmer of hope, letting him live long enough to make it into an evac chopper before succumbing to his wounds, leaving Johnson to take the reigns. As for Godzilla, he does what giant monsters in America do best: Destroys San Francisco.
