Will Ferrell is one of those people who you need only look at in order to burst out laughing. Which is why, I suppose, Everything Must Go naturally prepared you for a bonafide laughfest, only for that not to happen at all, and for me to be sad about that fact. Not only are the laughs in this "comedy" relatively sparse, but the plot itself is so serious that anybody who was expecting something zany or along the lines of a regular ol' Ferrell probably went out into the alley afterwards and shot themselves. That's to say, Everything Must Go is a movie about about an alcoholic, people... and not a funny alcoholic or anything, but one suffering from very real problems and issues that this movie wants to work through with you - for entertainment purposes? Alas, it's not just the lack of laughs that made this a tough watch: there's a surprisingly little amount of originality to be found here, despite some of the movie's best attempts to subvert cliches. Am I saying, then, that I would have ultimately preferred this to be a wacky comedy showdown instead of the indie dramedy that it was? I suppose I am: but only because it's not a very good indie dramedy, mind.
