10 Movies Way Freakier Than You Thought

The good, the bad, and the really, really ugly.

One of the common aspects of great movies is that they tend to offer up something new for audiences on repeat viewings, re-contextualising what they saw the first time around in ways clever, hilarious, and sometimes even disturbing.

With these 10 films, each can just be taken totally on-the-level as a well-crafted slice of Hollywood entertainment, but for those really prepared to engage with all the subtext and innuendo, it's clear there's so much more going on beneath the surface.

From scant lines of provocative dialogue to creepy character backstories everyone's basically forgotten about, uncomfortable final implications and everything in-between, these movies are all a hell of a lot weirder than most fans actually realise.

In some cases you can't really be blamed for wanting to take a more surface-level reading of the movies given some of the unsavoury suggestions they make otherwise, but for all but the most wilfully obtuse of audiences, these truths can't be forgotten once learned.

Above all else, these revelations make it clear just how much oddball subtext and subtle creepiness can make it into your average blockbuster movie...

10. Truman's Wife Is Basically A Porn Actress - The Truman Show

Despite its slick veneer, The Truman Show is ultimately a tragic, achingly human film about a man, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), breaking free from the constrained, artificial environment he was born into.

Truman is of course the subject of the titular 24/7 reality TV show, whereby every aspect of his existence has been carefully curated, from the brand name products in his cupboard to even his wife Meryl (Laura Linney), who is actually an actress by the name of Hannah Gill.

The fact that Hannah essentially has the full-time job of being Truman's not-so-pretend wife raises a number of unsettling implications, namely that she's required to have sex with Truman on a regular basis.

In one telling scene, the creator of The Truman Show, Christof (Ed Harris), even says, "I'm determined that television's first on-air conception will still take place."

Though the film makes it clear that the show cuts away any time Truman and "Meryl" have sex, the talk of an on-air conception entirely blurs the line between the profession of actor and sex worker.

If Christof's plan to depict the on-air conception of their baby had gone ahead, Meryl truly would've unambiguously crossed the Rubicon into porn actress territory.
