6. Titanic

It may come as a shock now, given Titanic’s legendary status, but prior to the film’s release people were predicting a box-office equivalent of the actual Titanic’s demise.

This was because it shared some important things in common with Waterworld, a film released just a couple of years prior. Like Waterworld it was set at sea, had a huge budget and there was an incident in which a large body of ice was to blame.

“Well I already know how it ends,” said every single smart-arse film critic at the time, as if that isn’t true of literally any film based on real events. Based on nothing more than some vague historical knowledge and a pre-existing bias against sea-faring films, everyone condemned Titanic to the realms of Bad Movie Hell.

That is, until they actually watched it. Yes, at times there’s some un-comfy dialogue, slow scenes or some unlikeable characters, but overall it is recognised as a masterpiece of a movie. The message here is "Don’t judge a book by its unrelated precursor."
