There are a good number of reasons why a normal human being might want to avoid a film like Cannibal Holocaust regardless of its most despicable factor; that's to say, this is an exploitation movie to end all exploitation movies, given a plot that focuses on a crew of filmmakers who venture into the jungles of South America and find themselves speared, chewed upon and cut to shreds by a group of hungry cannibals. It's a real horror show. But Cannibal Holocaust's most horrific element stems from the fact that the movie - which was once rumoured to be an actual snuff film - contains scenes of actual animal death, the worst of which hones in on a group as they brutally murder a large turtle in graphic detail. Not to mention the later deaths of a pig, a squirrel monkey and a coatimundi - all real. Said parts of Cannibal Holocaust are insanely uncomfortable to watch; such treatment of animals should never have been tolerated. Whilst the cow slaughter in a movie like Apocalypse Now was - at least - that of a ritual sacrifice recorded on film (the cow would have died either way), these animal deaths were carried out for the sake of the production.
