10 Non-Horror Movies That Are HORRIFYING

9. Watership Down

Don't let that beautiful animation and a gorgeous Art Garfunkel song fool you into thinking otherwise - Watership Down is freakin' traumatising.

This adaptation of Richard Adams' beloved novel - about a group of rabbits seeking out a new home following the destruction of their warren - has surely left millions of children shedding tears over the last 45 years, so unflinching is its brutal depiction of nature.

With a body count easily topping most slasher flicks, and a shocking amount of bloody on-screen violence for a PG film, Watership Down demonstrates animal existence in all of its horrifying, uncaring brutality. As such, the film has remained a contentious one for its uncommonly grim tone for a movie aimed primarily at children, though many have also sought to defend it for its matter-of-fact depiction of nature without veering into tacky exploitation territory.

Even as an adult, though, the sights that director Martin Rosen has to show you will leave a bruising impact.
