10 Oscar-Worthy Recent Performances The Academy Will Ignore

2. Taron Egerton - Rocketman

After Bohemian Rhapsody made more money than anyone expected and won Rami Malek the Best Actor Oscar, everyone knew the biopic was sure to become a trend.

And right they were.

Next up was an R-rated (as opposed to Bohemian’s PG-13) musical about the ups and downs of legendary singer, Elton John.

Taron Egerton plays the veteran performer, and unlike Malek did with Mercury, Egerton actually did all of his own singing; coming quite close to that of the actual John. Egerton has starred in films before (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Eddie the Eagle), but never has he been given a role with such range and, in all truthfulness, flamboyancy.

Egerton didn’t shy away from any part of the rock’n’rollers life. The drugs, the drinking, the ladies, the men, the abuse; it’s all there and it’s all brought to life by Egerton’s career defining performance.

A few predictors actually have Egerton as one of the frontrunners to win Best Actor, but with so many more films to come in the rest of 2019, it’ll be hard for him to be remembered, regardless of how stellar he was.
