In 1994, Vince McMahon and the WWF were subjected to immense scrutiny by way of a drug trial, and very nearly caused McMahon's entire house of cards to collapse. The WWF owner was on trial for apparently knowingly distributing steroids to performers such as Hulk Hogan, and in the vein of a crime family, his wife Linda took the CEO mantle while he fought the charges. The prosecution played hard-ball against McMahon, appointing Hulk Hogan as its star witness, and though Hogan made his best effort not to incriminate his boss, it did result in a falling out between the two. Vince scarcely avoided jail time, though the scandal caused the WWF many PR problems throughout the 90s, something that again came to prominence in the wake of the Chris Benoit scandal of 2007, resulting in the WWE instituting their Wellness Policy.
