As a genre of entertainment, horror houses easily the most diverse and creative community going. One of the most famous of these is the paranormal and supernatural subgenre.

Easily one of the oldest strands of horror going, the paranormal have plagued people's imaginations for thousands of years, posing impossible questions and throwing unexplainable events at audiences all the time. Paranormal horror stories have become ways of answering these questions and coming to terms with these events, as well as giving fans some of the most chilling scares they've ever encountered along the way.

The paranormal subgenre has continued to surge as the big screens of cinema have continued to go from strength to strength. From demonic possessions, haunted old houses, strange creatures stalking people from afar, to lost legends come to life, here's our take on ten paranormal horror films you absolutely need to see before you die.

10. The Legend Of Hell House

An underrated gem to kick off the list, The Legend Of Hell House is a 1973 British supernatural film based around the Richard Matheson story, Hell House. Given the snappy tagline of 'For the sake of your sanity, you better hope it isn't true!', the film follows four researchers who travel to an allegedly haunted house for a week.

This house is rumoured to have been responsible for the deaths of several fellow researchers that had been staying there beforehand, with the tale of the notorious 'Roaring Giant' serial killer at the heart of the house's mysterious past.

The Roaring Giant was, in life at least, a 6ft 5 sadistic serial killer named Emeric Belasco, whose sick and twisted torture methods left behind dozens of lost souls still wandering the halls of his manor.

The Legend of Hell House isn't the typical sort of paranormal ghost story audiences might be familiar with, but it still contains more than enough stomach-churning moments to get a good scare going. The harsh electronic soundtrack and dated look of the film somehow even find a way of making the scares even punchier, the performances from the likes of Pamela Franklin make this a vintage nugget any horror fan should check out!
