Jordan Peele's Get Out achieved a virtually unprecedented three-hitter of critical acclaim, commercial success and awards love for the horror genre, with Peele even winning a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his devilishly entertaining satirical horror outing.
You can certainly argue that Get Out is presenting a social allegory far scarier than any supernatural hooey - because it's rooted in basic truth - yet on a purely visceral level, as a piece of genre filmmaking? It's just not scary.
To Peele's credit, he keeps jump scares to a fair minimum, and is clearly more interested in creating a character-driven thriller with kooky, Twilight Zone-esque fringe horror elements than anything traditionally, outwardly horrific.
And to that end, Get Out is a resounding success, abetted by cracking performances and strong technicals. Yet it sticks with viewers not because it's uniquely terrifying, but because it holds a mirror up to contemporary society in a smart and diverting way.
