10. A Wrinkle In Time

What’s It About?

Based on Madeleine L'Engle’s sixties novel of the same name, A Wrinkle In Time sees a thirteen-year-old girl embark on a mission to rescue her father from imprisonment on a faraway planet. Along the way she enlists help from her pals and some out of this world companions. Her method of getting around – you’ve guessed it – is via some crafty time travelling.

Who’s In It?

Disney have entrusted Selma director Ava DuVernay to bring this version of L'Engle’s novel to the big screen. She’s assembled an eclectic crew with relative newcomer Storm Reid taking the lead as planet-hopping protagonist Meg Murray, aided by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Wetherspoon and Mindy Kaling in the awesomely named roles of Mrs Which, Mrs Whatsit and Mrs Who, respectively. Also steering the ship is Chris Pine – presumably he’s been loaned out by the Federation – and Zach Galifianakis.

Why It’ll Be Awesome:

Disney have learnt from the mistakes of their 2003 TV treatment of the novel and have pulled out all the stops to create what they hope will be a sci-fi Chronicles Of Narnia. Early trailer buzz is high and given DuVernay’s skills at crafting realistic stories with real themes, it’s likely this has real potential to be a successful franchise for the Mouse House.
