Quick, explain Jean Grey€™s powers! Stop, you just wasted 15 minutes of my life and yours. Even though companies spend millions on advertising, word of mouth still bolsters those efforts. It's difficult to convince a skeptical friend to spend a few hours in the theatre if you can€™t explain what they are going to see properly. By way of contrast, Carol Danvers' powers are perfect for the casual viewer or newcomer €“ she can fly, she€™s basically bulletproof and she€™s super-strong. Somehow I think audiences can create a reasonable idea in their minds based on that description. Sure, there is more to it than that if you want to get all nerdy €“ which I do €“ with it, but the basics are easily relatable and also well within the scope of what we can expect from studios to accomplish. This goes far in terms of creating expectations that can be met without concern that the studio would lay up so to speak. That€™s how you justify a strong budget and high expected returns, without having to rely on mystical artefacts, psychic locking or xenobiology. Outside the geek dollar, those things aren't going to put bums on seats.
