Will Smith hasn't had a proper hit for a few years - since Men In Black 3 in 2012, which isn't that long ago, but big Willie's got a reputation to uphold - so it's natural that he's elected to jump on the superhero bandwagon by playing Suicide Squad's Deadshot. It's not Smith returning to much safer blockbuster territory (well, safer than After Earth anyway) that's most intriguing, though. It's been a long time since Smith actually played the bad guy, or been part of an ensemble - the last time he truly did either was when he played opportunistic con man Paul in Six Degrees Of Separation back in 1993. Mostly, Smith's been a pretty squeaky clean frontman since then, which is a shame considering his slickness and charm becomes much more arresting when the character he's playing is really one mean sonofabitch. Deadshot is a threefold opportunity for Smith. For one, he can rejuvenate a career that by his standards has flagged; secondly, he can introduce himself to the geekdom; finally, and most importantly, he has the chance to begin a new phase, one where audiences get to see the darker, more challenging, more interesting side of an actor who's been just good for too long.
