10 Recent Movie Choices That Pissed Off The Fans
9. Alien: Romulus - Deep-Fake Ian Holm
Resurrecting a deceased actor using CGI is a questionable practice at the very best of times, and it generally just isn't a very good idea. Alien: Romulus, the latest instalment of the Alien franchise, provided an unwelcome reminder of that last summer.
The android that the characters find on an abandoned space station, Rook (voiced by Daniel Betts), turns out to be the same model as the original film's Ash, played by the late, great Sir Ian Holm, and so looks like Ash.
For starters, this link to the original film was unnecessary and felt more like a "look at me!" fan service moment than anything else. Alien: Romulus is easily the best Alien film since 1986's Aliens, and it's a generally impressive sci-fi-horror flick; the biggest issue holding it back was the excess of nostalgia-bait across the board, so this really didn't do the film any favours.
Even if they insisted on having the android look similar to Ash, why not just get an actor who looks like him instead? The CGI deployed here was distracting as hell, to put it mildly, and it didn't make anyone happy. Still, to give credit to the filmmakers, they did listen to the feedback and improved the CGI for the home release, so that's something.
