5. Uncle Nubar Korda - The Phoenician Scheme

Of all the movies you might expect to see someone blow themselves up with a grenade, one directed by Wes Anderson probably isn't it.

And yet, his latest film The Phoenician Scheme climaxes with protagonist Zsa-Zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro) throwing a poison gas capsule at his half-brother, "Uncle" Nubar Korda (Benedict Cumberbatch). But that doesn't quite finish the job.

An inexplicably still-alive Nubar then reappears in front of Zsa-Zsa atop a miniature model of the Korda dam, holding a grenade.

He removes the pin and waits for nature to take its course, the explosion immediately blowing him to smithereens and destroying the model dam, releasing a torrent of water.

Though the explosion is more comical than brutal in nature given that it doesn't show even a scrap of gore, it's still wildly unexpected territory for a Wes Anderson movie.

Considering the many grenade-related gags throughout the film, though, it does feel like a fitting payoff and worthy end for Uncle Korda.
