2. Jack O'Connell as Remmick - Sinners
If you can't stop thinking or talking about Sinners, then don't worry, as you're not alone. It's a burning fever that's turned global.
It's taken the world by storm, and one overwhelming reason for Sinners' staggering success is its nuanced and nightmarish villain, Remmick, who is brought to life by one of the UK's finest and fiercest actors, Jack O'Connell.
Ryan Coogler, whose rogues gallery includes Sinners star Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger and Tenoch Huerta's Namor, has a knack for crafting captivating, complex, and even compassionate antagonists. O'Connell's Remmick is no exception.
He's charming, conniving, frightening and even funny at times. And although thousands of years old, Remmick finds himself in a period where every book is judged by its cover and in his case, a suspected racist white man who wants to tear down Smoke and Stack's little piece of Eden.
But the truth is a little more complicated. Remmick sympathises and even relates due to the similar oppression he and his Irish ancestors suffered. Unlike cinematic vampires that have preceded him, Remmick doesn't seek to consume blood solely. But also, consume culture and music.
Of course, he's no angel by any means, considering he's a bloodthirsty vampire at the end of the day (and one whose intentions may be less noble than he lets on). But, there is a perverse method to his perceived madness.
After all, the Choctaw said it best in that "He's not what he seems."
