Tomatometer rating: 88%Gross: $3.7 million For a foreign arthouse film, Winter Sleep made a respectable $3.7 million worldwide - but that only really takes into account box office in foreign territories, where it was a surprise hit in France and a less-than-surprising hit in its home country, Turkey. The box office figures for the US and UK aren't even available, but considering how slim the release was, you can bet it didn't take much. It's a shame, because Winter Sleep is a dense, poetic multi-character study that eclipses most of what counts for 'drama' in western cinema these days. Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan shoots rural Turkey like it's some science fiction landscape, and draws note-perfect performances across the board from his cast. Winter Sleep didn't just draw rave reviews, it won the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, which should be some indication of what an impact it makes. It's a slow-burner, one that hangs heavy over the viewer long after they've seen it.
