Not the case, sadly, for Tomm Moore's Song Of The Sea, which followed Moore's previously Oscar-nominated The Secret Of Kells to be nominated for Best Animated Featured at the 2015 Academy Awards. Even though Song Of The Sea featured in a category of films that controversially beat out box office smash The Lego Movie, it took under a million dollars at the US box office. And though the film may not quite reach the giddy heights of Secret Of Kells, Song Of The Sea is still a mighty animation. Done in a storybook style, Moore's magical-realist movie is one for the family that has crucial resonance for the adults, who'll find a tale of magic slipping away from an increasingly sceptical society in the subtext. For every family member, though, it's hand-drawn moviemaking on another level.
