10 Recent Movies NOBODY Expected To Be Good

Who had the sexy snowman movie being a critical hit?

Generally speaking, audiences are pretty good at sniffing out when movie studios are about to drop a dumpster fire of a movie in their laps.

Perhaps the trailer sucks or there's been so much pre-release stink about the film's production that there's no chance in Hell of it ever being good, right?

But film lovers are as fallible as anyone else, and despite our better instincts, we too can be wrong about movies from time to time.

And that's certainly true of these 10 recent movies, each of which arrived amid through-the-floor expectations, only to turn out surprisingly well in the end.

Nobody expected any of these films to be good, from a belated horror prequel to numerous belated comedy sequels, seemingly low-effort genre offerings, and what ultimately turned out to be the best film ever made about a sexy snowman. Yup.

While not all of these movies were great, each was at least a decently entertaining time, far surpassing our low expectations in the process.

The lesson here? No matter how lazy and godawful a movie might look, there's almost always the possibility of a pleasant surprise...

10. The Beekeeper

The marketing for The Beekeeper made it look like the most quintessential "dumped in January" release imaginable - a John Wick knock-off from the wildly uneven David Ayer (Fury, Suicide Squad), with a script from the guy behind such cinematic classics as Ultraviolet, the remakes of Total Recall and Point Break, and Expend4bles.

This had "dud" written all over it, then, only for it to land a shockingly sturdy 71% on the Tomatometer and, better still, end up grossing over $150 million at the box office.

Ultimately Ayer had the good sense not to take the assignment too seriously, fashioning The Beekeeper as a brutal but often darkly hilarious action-thriller which was fine-tuned to the strengths of leading man Jason Statham.

It is a card-carrying Dad Movie in the best sense, wrapping a basic plot around intense action sequences, while also bringing an unexpected amount of personality to the table.

The Beekeeper has proven successful enough that a sequel is already in development. Let's go.
