10 Recent Movies So Good You Overlook Huge Flaws
10. Carry-On - It's Filled With Plot Holes
Carry-On is one of the most entertaining action films in recent memory. It's a delightfully unpredictable and endlessly suspenseful thrill ride that flies high thanks to its many shocking plot twists and two superb lead performances from Taron Egerton, who plays the picture's protagonist, and Jason Bateman, who plays brilliantly against type as a sadistic terrorist.
So yeah, it's an absolute blast... so long as you suspend your disbelief, that is.
The movie is full of plot holes, and there's no getting away from it. The Traveler (Bateman's unnamed terrorist) walks around the airport and acts suspiciously, yet no-one ever apprehends him. On numerous occasions, guns are fired without silencers, and apparently, nobody hears this since nobody locks the airport down.
In the film's second half, the Traveler arms the bomb he's planning to use and forces protagonist Ethan to disarm it in order to force him to comply... thus showing him how to disarm the bomb, which of course Ethan does later. Ethan also jumps into the cargo hold of a moving plane during the finale, which shouldn't have been doable.
The list goes on; it's not the most logical of films. Having said this, Carry-On makes it easy to overlook this thanks to the confidence and sincerity with which it provides its thrills, and because the interplay between Egerton and Bateman is so entertaining. As such, logic be damned, this movie just works.
