10 Recent Movies So Good You Overlook Huge Flaws

7. Deadpool & Wolverine - The Messy Plot

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a disastrous state right now, so it was a pleasant surprise that Deadpool & Wolverine ended up being as great as it was.

With its insane action sequences, consummate performances, hilarious gags, crowd-pleasing cameos, and heartfelt character development for both of its titular characters, Deadpool & Wolverine is a joyous superhero sequel, so much so that it's easy enough to forgive the often nonsensical narrative.

For starters, it's got a thoroughly unconvincing set-up. Why would the Time Variance Authority want to destroy Deadpool's (Ryan Reynolds) universe just because Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) isn't around anymore? They explain that when a focal hero is gone, a timeline dies, so why haven't they tried to do the same thing to the main timeline now that Iron Man's gone?

The rest of the movie also has its share of coincidences and contrivances, such as the (mostly awesome) villain Cassandra (Emma Corrin) making inexplicable mistakes and suddenly coming out with a big destroy-the-universe plan at the end.

There are also other story issues. Nearly all of the great supporting characters from the first two films - including Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) - are benched for most of it, and the Void dimension that most of the picture unfolds in is a visually drab wasteland with little in the way of good production design.

Therefore, one could call this a brilliant mess, one that compensates for its undeniable narrative flaws many times over.
