10 Recent Movies That Totally Took You By Surprise

3. Kneecap

You could say that Hollywood and the film industry aren't short of a biopic or two, especially those focusing on musicians, which more often than not follow the same format of documenting their inevitable rise from rags to riches.

However, Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap couldn't be any more different from said biopics that have preceded it, and that's the point. For example, all three band members (Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Caireallain, and J. J. Ó Dochartaigh) star as themselves in this feature film.

Of course, this isn't anything new if you take into account The Weeknd's recent pretentious mess that came in the form of Hurry Up Tomorrow, the difference being that all three men can, well, you know, act. Although they hold their own rather impressively for the majority of the movie, Kneecap is admittedly aided by the on-screen presence of Michael Fassbender.

It should be said that Kneecap is semi-biographical, thus blurring the lines between fact and fiction at points like others for narrative purposes, but in typical Kneecap fashion, it rips up the biopic rulebook to create an educational, engaging, and equally entertaining concoction of carnage which is exhilarating to watch unfold.

There's some great direction, writing, and cinematography on show here, but the real driving force is rather expectedly the music, as Kneecap provide their own backing track to perfectly portray the chaotic yet controversial nature of the group amongst their quest to save their native mother tongue from extinction.

Give this one a chance, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
