3. Visions of Ecstasy Banned For Blasphemy

Nigel Wingrove's 18-minute short film remains the only film to ever be refused classification on the grounds that it was blasphemous, given that it features scenes of Saint Teresa of vila sexually consorting with Jesus as he lies on the cross. Believing that the film might be "blasphemously libellous", it was refused classification, as to cut the film sufficiently would result in it barely running 9 minutes long. Despite numerous appeals, the decision was upheld until 2008, when the blasphemy laws in the UK were rescinded, and the film was granted a certificate. The most famous case associated with the incident was of a school-teacher attempting to sell the video in 1992 and being arrested for it. A staunch atheist, the teacher repeated his action near a church just to prove his point, which kick-started a very public debate about the nature of blasphemy.
