2. Alien 3—Dr Clemens
Disowned by its own director David Fincher (not sure if he went on to do anything more noteworthy), 1990’s Alien 3 is a messy, deeply flawed franchise instalment best known for how much better it might have been.
And for one extremely effective death scene.
The movie underwent countless revisions, with one draft setting the action on a wooden planet populated by future monks and another written by Neuromancer novelist William Gibson. But the bleak movie that audiences got saw Ripley crash landing on a prison world with a wily xenomorph in tow.
Luckily, Game of Thrones villain/ screen veteran Charles Dance was around to play Clemens, a gruff but kind hearted doctor who didn’t belong on this harsh planet. A non-Ripley deuteragonist for this depressing film! What a delightful sight, a character whose neither a cruel criminal nor a corrupt guard, just a genuinely good…
Wait, what’s that sneaking up behind him after he and Ripley have a heart-to-heart in the infirmary—Oops, never mind.
The film isn’t even halfway over and already the lone good guy in the cast is alien food.
