10 Sequels 2013 Just Doesn’t Need

7. Monsters University

I know that this film is for children. So I will cut it a little slack. I€™m also aware that it is being produced by the usually excellent Pixar. Their current track record has been less than stellar; but I€™m still hopeful that they will pick themselves up again. The problem I have with Monsters University is that everything about it screams cash-cow sequel (or, in this case, prequel). The original film, Monster€™s Inc. was released eleven years ago in 2002. The film had an ending with very good closure and definitely wasn€™t asking for a sequel. While the Toy Story series has proven Pixar can deliver, I€™m still nervous about it. For one, the Pixar team clearly recognise that the film doesn€™t warrant a sequel. Hence the choice to evade that issue with a shockingly unnecessary prequel. The idea sounds like something DreamWorks would cook up. The monsters from the original film come back...but this time it€™s different! They€™re in university. Ugh...I really, really hope that Pixar has something hidden up their sleeves with this one because I€™m not convinced.
