10 Shocking Movie Character Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere
2. Daniel - Green Room
Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier’s entire career has
been a masterclass in the sudden surprise death, with his string of dark
thrillers since 2007’s low-budget Murder Party all featuring bursts of vicious,
realistic violence which punctuate their bleak, darkly comic shaggy dog stories
just to keep the audience on their toes. However, 2015’s gritty siege thriller
Green Room earned a spot on this list by throwing us with one of cinema’s most gasp-inducing
unexpected murders.
When seemingly redeemable skinhead Daniel breaks ranks with his white supremacist gang to help the punk band they’re terrorizing, it at first feels like the film may be setting him up for a redemption arc. After all, it’s his girlfriend the Nazis have killed, so maybe he’ll look for revenge, right? Switch sides, become a rounded character—
That’s when Saulnier reminds you he has a sick sense of humour by blowing the morally complex brains out of this poor character’s skull, leaving any chance of a better life for him splattered across the bar.
Thanks, Jeremy, for a second there we thought there might be some sign of hope in this flick.
