The movie business can be a ruthless mistress, as although many actors pour everything they have into it, they are not always blessed to receive the same amount of care back. There are only so many positions at the top of the mountain, and even brilliant performers often end up falling into obscurity.

But there are a selection of "small-time" actors who prove that you can work very consistently and make a wonderfully varied career for yourself. These performers are well-known and likely faces that general audiences are familiar with even if they cannot place their names.

However, though these people have certainly done well for themselves, all of them truly deserve to be delivered a big project which brings them into the mainstream and possibly leads to them becoming a household name.

Each individual here has proven time and time again why they deserve to be at the top of the pile, but circumstances seem to constantly keep them tucked away, just under the surface.

10. Shea Whigman

It is very likely that you have watched something with this decorated actor in it, and it's also possible that you felt recognition of his face and voice, but not enough to fully draw your attention. Shea Whigman is the definition of the "that guy" actor - that being someone who you don't know the name of but feel familiar with.

Some of his most notable projects include films such as American Hustle, Deathnote and even a role in the hugely significant Joker. In all of these titles he brings compelling energy that is simultaneously severe, but warm and this is how he's built the majority of his career.

Whigman often tends to play the role of police officers - at least in his most notable projects - and this is possibly a disservice to him, as the majority of his performances end up feeling typecast and lacking in variety.

Despite this, the actor has put the work in and deserves a big break to show his capabilities.
