9. The Joker Switches Rachel & Dent's Locations - The Dark Knight
One of The Dark Knight's most iconic sequences - of which there are many - is the famous interrogation scene, where Batman (Christian Bale) quizzes The Joker (Heath Ledger) about the disappearance of both Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).
The Joker eventually explains that the two are hooked up with explosives in separate locations, and the Caped Crusader will need to choose which one to save.
After learning the apparent locations from the Clown Prince of Crime, Batman heads off to save Rachel, while Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) chases after Dent.
But as it turns out, The Joker knew that Batman would pursue the object of his affection rather than Gotham's white knight, and so pulled a switcharoo, causing Batman to discover Dent instead.
Mere moments later, the bombs go off, killing Rachel and leaving Dent with half of his face severely burned from the explosion.
In straight-up trolling Batman, The Joker killed the love of his life and corrupted Gotham's greatest hope for a brighter future, setting Dent aka Two-Face on a destructive path which ends with Batman effectively breaking his no-kill rule, whether the film wants to admit it or not, in order to save Gordon's son.
Sure, The Joker got caught in the end, but let's be honest, how long was he ever going to stay locked up? He played Batman in a way that Batman could never really avenge, given his supposed moral code and all.
