10 Strangest Oscar Nominations Of The Past 15 Years

3. The Time Machine - Makeup (2003)

What? Time Machine? Wasn€™t that a 1960€™s cult classic? They buy the machine in Big Bang Theory right? Right?! Wrong. It€™s a terrible 2002 remake. The makeup team for this movie successfully made Guy Pearce look like€ Guy Pearce.Fortunately it was Frida that took home the Oscar transforming Salma Hayek into the infamous Frida Kahlo. But only two nominees? Come on, Academy! Even just a mention of the make up in Gangs of New York or The Pianist would have been enough- and have you seen The Hours?! Have you seen Nicole Kidman€™s nose in that one?! The fact that someone somewhere decided that it should be a battle between Frida and the Time Machine is baffling. But what about the Morlock? Aren€™t they cool looking? Oh God no- I prefer the ones from the 60€™s. As you€™ll see, most of my beef with the Academy is mostly based on makeup and visuals... as far as acting goes I think they always at least nominate the right people. However, there seems to be this strange desire to award makeup artists for being €œclassic masters of the arts€ instead of trying something new. I for one was furious when Cloud Atlas wasn€™t mentioned for its masterful use of makeup, and there are far better examples of Hollywood movie makeup than what was displayed in the incredibly forgettable Time Machine.
