As well as their long and fruitful relationship with Pixar, arguably the most critically and commercially consistent studio in the business, Walt Disney Animation Studios has also undergone something of a renaissance in recent years itself, one that has seen their own in-house division challenge Pixar's domination of the animated feature.

Which begs the question; is this the end of Blue Sky Studios? Unfortunately, the answer is most likely yes.

The Ice Age franchise may have earned over $3.2bn at the box office and Blue Sky as a whole had a decent critical and commercial track record, but they were already struggling to compete with Disney and Pixar as an independent studio. Disney will probably handpick the best animators, dissolve the company and put their library onto their upcoming streaming service.
