10 Things Wrong With Jupiter Ascending

3. It's A Classic Example Of Style Over Substance

Accusing a movie of pushing style over substance is a common complaint of big-budget blockbusters such as this, and while the film is certainly preferable to something like Michael Bay's Transformers series, it's still nowhere near as imaginative and intelligent as its creators clearly think it is. It is practically impossible to knock the movie's visual effects and cinematography: the movie looks gorgeous from first frame to last and the action sequences do deliver some genuine thrills, but with a script so utterly lacking, these scenes just prove to be temporary distractions and little else. While the Wachowskis' The Matrix was a fascinating mixture of pop-philosophy and astounding action, they can't quite find a way to repeat the same success here, instead rustling up half-baked ideas about genetic ancestry without conjuring enough in the character department to make audiences actually care.
