10 Things You Didn't Know About Mark Hamill
2. He Burst A Blood Vessel On Set
It would seem that in his youth, Mr. Hamill was quite the accident prone young lad. During the famous trash compactor scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke is dragged under the murky garbage water by a nasty beast. While Leia and Han scream his name in vain, scanning the water for signs of life, Hamill is holding his breath for as long as he can. Why they didn't cut and give the impression that he was under water for such a long time, is frankly anybody's guess, but it is said that Hamill held his breath under the water for so long, that he burst a blood vessel in his face. As with the car crash, accounts on this vary.
Some say that the vessel burst on his face while others say a vessel burst in his eye. Recently someone on Reddit claims he has proof. Indeed, the photos of Luke's eye seem convincing and it has also been stated that the rest of the footage from that famous scene was shot so as to only show one side of Luke's face. Well done to Mark Hamill for his dedication to the cause, it seems.
With accounts of him badly damaging his wrist on the Millennium Falcon, it's becoming a wonder that Hamill emerged from Star Wars alive.
