Her co-star Gene Kelly is said to have insulted her over her lack of skill so much that she was once found crying under a piano by Fred Astaire when he visited the studio.

She told him what had happened and Astaire offered to teach her.

Reynolds began to train rigourously. Her feet were reportedly bleeding by the time they finished filming the Good Morning dance number, a shoot that lasted from 8:00am to 11:00pm. Reynolds later said of the movie, "Singin' in the Rain and childbirth were the two hardest things I ever had to do in my life."

Kelly later admitted that he was unkind to her and said that he was surprised she was still willing to speak to him afterwards.
