In fact, former Major League Baseball pitcher Dock Ellis probably wouldve never played a single game if he had to undergo todays testing. Ellis had lifelong substance abuse problems, which were exacerbated when he was a professional player. After retiring he claimed that he had never pitched a game without being high, including his career highlight: his June 12, 1970 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres. Ellis claimed that he pitched the game under the influence of LSD and nearly missed the game because he was dropping acid with friends who lived over a hundred miles away. Ellis later said that he hallucinated that U.S. President Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire and that one batter was Jimi Hendrix. Though reporters would later doubt the veracity of Ellis' story, he stuck to his claim until his 2008 death. The wild hallucinations that Ellis might have experienced during the game could make a movie version of the game a trippy experience. Also, because Ellis cleaned up after retirement and later became a drug counsellor it has a feel-good ending.
