Every now and then, an art film comes along that makes such an impression on the industry that the entire direction of film is shunted every so slightly into a better direction. When Take Shelter came out in 2011, it catapulted Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain onto the playing field and secured writer/director Jeff Nichols as one of the most important filmmakers in the rising ranks. Here he teams up with Shannon once again in the intriguing Midnight Special. A loving father takes his son on the run, against his mother's wishes, when it's found that he has developed special powers. What starts as a local matter soon intensifies and the government join the chase, forcing the boy's father to decide what's right for his son versus the revelation that could change all of humanity. With a nostalgic nudge into the world of lens flares and mystery, the Midnight Special trailer has a similar vibe to Close Encounters and, more recently, Super 8. It's that feeling of the unknown and the scary excitement that the unknown brings - wrapped up with the most human of intimacy. Midnight Special is out in the UK on March 18th and in the UK on April 8th.
