Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, these films came along and began to change the reputation of the killer doll. His new scarred look was an outstanding contribution, but there became this weird emphasis on using shock comedy to give the films more personality. While this did work in essence, it also wholly stripped any semblance of horror in the franchise.

Gone were the days of the horrifying serial killer trapped in a doll's body. Now we had to contend with Chucky the wise-cracking goofball killer and his wife/child. It can be said that they tried to be funny, but they also tried to be scary, and it failed.

The direction they went in soiled the original franchise. While the recent remake isn't fantastic, it does at least lean more into the horror than comedy.
